Survey to Commissioning
Dumbwaiter Installation London
New dumbwaiter and service lift systems for restaurants, hotels and homes across London. Free site survey, fixed written quote, and a clear path from empty shaft to handover.
New install, repair, or replace?
Not every broken lift needs a new unit. If the car still runs but doors stick, call stations fail, or the motor is noisy, repair or a planned overhaul is usually the right call. A new installation makes sense when there is no lift yet, the shaft geometry cannot take a like-for-like replacement, or the existing machine is beyond economical repair.
If you are mid-service with a dead kitchen lift, start with repair — see our food lift repair and service lift repair pages. Come back here when you are planning a new system or a full replacement.
From survey to commissioning
- 1
Free site survey
We measure the space, check structural and electrical constraints, and talk through how you will actually use the lift — kitchen service, linen, home deliveries, or stock.
- 2
Design & fixed quote
You get a written specification and a fixed price. Capacity, stops, cab finish and any shaft or electrical works are spelled out before anyone starts.
- 3
Shaft & electrical prep
Where builder’s work or a dedicated circuit is needed, that happens first. We coordinate so the plant room and landings are ready before the unit arrives.
- 4
Install
Guide rails, car, doors, interlocks and controls go in with the work contained landing by landing. Most London installs finish in two to four days on site.
- 5
Commissioning & handover
Full travel and safety tests, staff walkthrough, and documentation. You leave with a working system and clear next steps for ongoing maintenance.
Full service detail also sits under Services — New Installation.
Residential vs commercial capacity
Home installations are typically two stops at 50–100 kg — enough for shopping, laundry or library loads without over-specifying the mechanism. Published residential supply-and-install ranges start from £4,500–£9,000. Commercial kitchen, hotel and care settings usually need 100–250 kg (or more for industrial duty), heavier doors and food-safe finishes where relevant — £7,000–£14,000 for most commercial jobs, with heavier multi-floor systems in the industrial band up to £18,000.
Exact figures depend on stops, shaft access and cab specification. We publish the bands on our pricing page and walk through what drives cost in the UK installation cost guide and London cost guide.

Listed buildings and planning
Most straightforward installs inside an existing dwelling or commercial fit-out do not need planning permission. Listed buildings and conservation areas are different — fabric, appearance and neighbour impact matter. Read the practical rules in our planning permission guide before you commit to cutting a shaft.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does dumbwaiter installation take in London?
Most installations complete in two to four days on site once the shaft and electrics are ready. The full path — survey, design, any builder’s work, install and commissioning — typically spans a few weeks depending on access and structural works.
Do I need a new shaft for a dumbwaiter?
Not always. Many London properties already have a cupboard stack, redundant chimney breast or service void that can take a unit. Where a new shaft is needed, builder’s work is quoted separately — typically in the structural works band published on our pricing page.
What warranty do you provide on a new installation?
Every new installation includes a 12-month workmanship warranty covering the installation work we carry out. Manufacturer cover on the equipment itself depends on the unit specified.
Is a LOLER examination required after installation?
If the dumbwaiter is used at work, the employer or the organisation or person who owns, operates or has control of the equipment must arrange a LOLER thorough examination through a competent person — typically an insurance-appointed examiner. That is not something we carry out. Timing follows that competent person's written scheme of examination, or the applicable statutory intervals where no scheme applies — commonly 12 months for goods-only lifts like dumbwaiters, or 6 months where equipment lifts people. We handle installation, repair and maintenance and can advise on getting an examination arranged.
